Bioplastics: Greenwashing or Genuine Solution? The Truth Behind the Hype

Bioplastics are now seen as an eco-friendly option compared to regular plastic made from petroleum products as they claim to have a lower impact, on the environment. There is complexity, behind this claim though. While they are promoted as being made from plants and able to break down a lot of bioplastics actually contain a small amount of plant based materials.

The Reality of 20 Percent Bio Based Materials

I find it quite astonishing to learn that certain bioplastics consist of only 20 percent plant based materials and the remaining 80 percent derived from fossil fuels right?. It makes me question the validity of their assertions, whether they genuinely provide the advantages they profess to possess.

The Issue, with “Biodegradable”

The label “biodegradable” can sometimes be deceptive as certain bioplastics may not decompose effectively in compost or landfill settings due, to the lack of conditions required for breakdown to occur naturally over time, in the environment.

The Art of Greenwashing

The absence of guidelines and uniform labeling, for plastics enables companies to take advantage of the growing desire for environmentally friendly goods by engaging in greenwashing practices. A deceptive technique where items are promoted as being greener than they actually are. Which could mislead consumers and impede authentic progress, towards a circular economy.

The Significance of Embracing Transparency and Accountability

In the realm of producing bioplastics addressing these challenges requires a focus, on increasing transparency and accountability within the industry’s operations. Label guidelines play a role in ensuring that consumers have access to information about the bio based content and degradability of these products. Empowering consumers with details is essential, for enabling them to make informed choices.

Major Takeaway

Even though bioplastics offer hope, for a greener tomorrow the present situation leaves much to be desired. The limited use of materials. Misleading assertions about their eco friendliness prompt worries about their impact on the environment and the prevalence of deceptive marketing. It’s essential to scrutinize bioplastics and insist on openness, from producers. This way we can guarantee that these materials genuinely aid in creating a future of adding to the issue of plastic pollution.

Some sources that back up the claim that certain bioplastics might not be as environmentally friendly as they appear;

  1. “The Environmental Impact of PLA Bioplastics, from Start to Finish ” a report by Eunomia Research and Consulting in March 2024 delves into the cycle of acid (PLA) a widely used bioplastic. It sheds light on the repercussions such as issues stemming from agricultural practices and difficulties, in proper disposal methods when reaching the end of its lifecycle.
  2. “The Deceptive Nature of Bioplastics and Compostable Plastics ” a publication, by Beyond Plastics sheds light on the misunderstandings surrounding bioplastics and compostable plastics by highlighting their failure to decompose as marketed and their potential to add to pollution.
  3. The article “Are Bioplastics the Answer?” published on Resilience.org in April 2024 presents the viewpoint that although bioplastics are promoted as friendly alternatives some argue that they can have negative effects due, to the intensive agricultural practices involved which may lead to ecosystem harm and community displacement.
  4. Is Bioplastics Truly Environmentally Friendly? A discussion, on the sustainability of bioplastics explores whether they offer advantages or if they are simply a form of greenwashing at interpack 2026 convention.
  5. “The Reality of Bioplastics Revealed in ‘Greenwashing’ Is Fashionable Now” (From Debris Free Oceans); This article questions the idea that bioplastics offer a fix to waste issues by highlighting that numerous bioplastics do not break down in nature as advertised.
  6. “The article discusses why bioplastics may not be the solution, to the plastic issue due to their dependence on agriculture that requires a lot of land and their difficulty, in breaking down naturally.

Sustainability in Action: Gable Top Cartons to Save Our Oceans

Animals and humans have common traits since both are driven by instincts to ensure their survival. Each member of the species has a designated role and responsibilities in a society. They both have families and offsprings who need to be nurtured. We work, eat, rest, and parent . For an impressively long time this wonderful earth planet, the human civilization existed peacefully in the world.

But one consideration that sets humans apart is the ability to construct and imagination. Humans have utilized the materials within the environment and made opportunities. It has been into our advantage, to reinterpret this world for our purposes. It was not the case for the animals.

The increasing waste production worldwide has developed into an alarming issue because of its ecological impacts primarily on marine ecosystems where marine animals especially fishes, birds and also some tiny creatures like planktons that exist in that environment are greatly affected by the presence of plastic waste. The issue of plastics is made worse by all when the life cycle of a plastic bottle can live for centuries which makes their decomposition not possible in a short period of time.

While plastic debris is somehow confused with food by most aquatic animals, there are actual microplastics as they fragment into smaller pieces. More species, including fish, sea turtles, seabirds, and sometimes large marine mammals ingest plastics. Such plastics cause physical harm through actualized internal injuries, digestive blockages, and starvation death because the plastic occupies space in the stomach, preventing the real food items from ingestion.

Currently there are 358 trillion particles drifting in the surface waters of the worlds oceans with approximately 14 million tons gathering, at the seabed. These particles have spread to remote regions and even reached the deepest sediments posing a significant danger, to the marine ecosystem.

Sea turtles heavily rely on jellyfish as a food source, in their diet. Sometimes mistake plastic bags for these creatures when feeding in the ocean waters. Unfortunately they are unable to process these plastic items resulting in instances where the turtles face suffocation. Similarly seabirds have been found with amounts of plastic material, in their stomach, which hinders their ability to absorb nutrients effectively leading to malnutrition issues.

Many seals and sea lions still have plastic bands and fishing nets embedded around their necks and with time, the material cuts into their flesh. Another by accident associated issue is whales have a great deal of weight and are usually wrapped in huge chunks of plastic compounds which are even on the upper triacetin or head and deplete their swimming capability and savaging of air which will as a result make the creatures drown after some time.

Plastic is affordable material that we often rely upon without considering the impact of our selfish and greedy actions when we prioritize convenience, over the well being of others around us—one that has escalated into a pressing concern, in recent times.

Gabletop Pak to the rescue! Seventy four per cent paper board, twenty one per cent PE (inner + outside lining), and five per cent metal make up the Gable Top containers. There is 88% less plastic in these boxes, which results in a 72% lower carbon footprint. The product is simple to clean and repurpose several times. Its recyclable and refillable design contributes to reducing the usage of plastics and excessive resource consumption.

Gable Top cartons offer an outstanding reputation for their overall performance and have triangles on the tops. They can preserve moisture content material that is not most effective, the consistency of juice or water; however, even if it is heavy like milk, the internal masking will not get spoiled. Items with an extended shelf lifestyle encompass dried pasta, pet food, or powdered egg whites. Containers of this type can also be used to keep hair products, including cleaning soap, shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer.

With a multipurpose and sustainable technique, these cartons are a saviour for our aquatic buddies.

Travel Green: Gabletop Pak’s Sustainable Shift

Throughout history humans have introduced groundbreaking ideas and advancements in technology to simplify our routines and enhance our quality of life albeit, at the cost of depleting natural resources.

Indian Railways operates more than 15,000 passenger trains and cater to more than 23 million passengers daily. One of the primary items distributed in the trains are- plastic water bottles. More than 23 million plastic bottles are used just during the travel in a nation which is known for its extreme heat every single day.

We all know what prolonged heat does to metal, glass and steel. But are we aware what chemical reactions are going on in a plastic bottle kept in sun?

In a research study published in the Eco Environment & Health journal researchers examined six types of plastic water bottles under UV A light and direct sunlight exposure. Alarmingly they found that the bottles deteriorated due to the rays and released compounds ( VOC s ). According to the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) volatile organic compounds are gasses emitted from solids or liquids. VOC s contain compounds that could potentially pose health risks, in both the term and long term. Indoor levels of organic compounds (VOCs) often exceed outdoor levels by as much, as ten times with plastic being a major contributor to this trend due to its susceptibility to photodegradation from sunlight exposure and the extensive use of plastic, in our everyday lives presenting significant risks to human health and the environment alike.

According to Dr. Huase Ou, from Jinan University in China’s Guangdong Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution, the Health research team’s statement mentioned that plastic bottles may release substances into the air under sunlight exposure. It is essential for consumers to be mindful of these dangers in situations where bottled water is left exposed to sunlight, for longer durations.

Since there has been extensive research done on the negative effects of plastics for both- humans and the environment, it is a high time to find and create an alternative. Gabletop Pak to the rescue!

Gabletop Pak have introduced a revolutionizing product to aid the packaging industry. The Gable Top cartons are FSC+ certified and BPA free! They are made from 88 per cent paper board, 8 per cent PE (inner + outer lining) and 4 per cent aluminum. These cartons are 88 per cent less plastic which generates 72 percent less carbon footprint. One can easily wash and clean the product and reuse multiple times. Its refillable and reusable nature helps in limiting the use of plastics and overuse of resources.

These cartons are highly durable in nature. They have the potential to hold liquids ranging from water, juice to viscous liquids such as milk without corroding the lining of the product. Foods such as pasta, pet food, egg whites can also be stored safely.

Gable top pak cartons are designed with a user-friendly approach in mind. They are easy to carry and transport. Unlike steel, metal or glass containers, these cartons are lightweight and perfect for daily commute. With its practical shape, these containers can be stored and shelved in almost all places. This will help bring down the overuse of plastic bottles especially in the trains and help create a safe space for both- humans and the environment.
